F irst of all, I would like to thank the State Government’s leadership for
giving us the confidence to lead the team to come up with this book,
and we are proud to state here that this confidence has given us all
the pride we need to produce this book that we titled as “KUCHING . . . Terus
Makmur” or Prosperous Kuching.
Besides being the Capital and the Centre of Administration, Kuching was also
where history and development of Sarawak began. As such, development,
progress and changes experienced by Kuching was known to be faster and
more extensive when compared to other Divisions in the State, thus making
Kuching a more progressive and modern Division and a Metropolitan City.
For that, we should ensure that what was built and developed in Kuching
should be continued, improved, protected and conserved, resulting in its people
enjoying a healthy and good living. This was our rationale when choosing
the title for this book, in line with the theme 45 years of Progress within
Malaysia.
The cooperation and attention given by everybody involved in whatever way
they contributed in the completion of this book, was indeed very encouraging
and heartfelt appreciation we record for them. Special appreciation is hereby
accorded to our Right Honourable Chief Minister, Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib
Mahmud for his far-sightedness to produce a book that could be inherited by
our future generations. Sincerest thanks we record for Datuk Amar Abang
Haji Johari bin Tun Openg, Datuk Amar Haji Mohamad Morshidi bin Abdul
Ghani and Datuk Amar Wilson Baya Dandot for their ever willingness to give
us guidance and advice. Last but not least, deepest appreciation to all the
Elected Representatives in Kuching for their contributions to fund the making
and publication of this book. With all humility and gratitude, all efforts
being put in have culminated in the successful production of “KUCHING . . .
Terus Makmur” book.
