The occupational distribution if he three generations shows distinctly different patterns. As shown in Table 10 below, the government sector provided the majority jobs
for the respondents themselves, but was much less important for their parents or for their children. Only 17 per cent of the respondent’s parents worked for the
government, likely reflecting the relatively low education levels of the respondents’ parents and also the small size of the government sector during British Colonial
period. While the respondents themselves report that 67 per cent of them served the bulk of their careers in government. This decline likely reflects the growth
of employment opportunities for educated youth in the private sector, and it may also reflect the government bias against hiring non-Malays who make up 63 per
cent of the total number of adult children of the respondents.
