c. Gravity-feed water supply and basic amenities for Penan at Long Sabai
This was provided to 22 families in Long Sabai, with connections to their kitchens,
toilets and bathrooms. A 2-km poly pipe, cement, steel cables for supporting the
pipes across rivers, wash basins and toilet bowls were supplied. Construction was
completed on 2 December 2009.
d. Sg. Kuba’an suspension bridge, Long Semirang
The Kubaan suspension bridge is 32 metres long and took about one (1) month to
complete. It was launched by the Director of Forests, Datu Haji Len Talif Salleh on 17
December 2009. The jungle trail was also upgraded at the same time.
iii. Transboundary Biodiversity Conservation
a. Handicraft training
Training on handicraft was conducted in Kampung Terang Baru, Long Bawan,
Indonesia. This training was participated by seven (7) communities from Ba’ Kelalan
and 29 participants from 15 villages in Long Bawan. Training were given by five (5)
teachers from Long Bawan specializing in making tudung, saung, tudung saji,
tampi/rinuh/raing, anyaman tanduk, bubu, wood carving and pottery.
b. Joint scientific training and research with Kayan Mentarang National Park, Indonesia
The training was part of the TBCA initiative to exchange scientific research,
information and training. The purpose of the joint activity was to strengthen the
bilateral cooperation in managing TBCA and to give exposure to young researchers in
both countries.
The training, emphasizing research in ecology, botany, ornithology and mammal was
held from 2-10 August 2009 and participated by six (6) officers from Kayan
Mentarang National Park, Indonesia and one officer (1) researcher from WWF-
Indonesia; 10 from SFC, one (1) from FRIM and three (3) staff from ITTO. 20 personal
from Forest Department Sarawak and 13 local communities assisted during the
training.
