Ketika kemuncaknya pergolakan itu, seorang
pengembara Inggeris, iaitu James Brooke tiba di
Kuching pada bulan Ogos 1839. Pada masa itu,
Sarawak adalah sebahagian daripada Kesultanan
Brunei. Datu Patinggi Ali mengetuai pemberontakan
menentang pemerintahan Pengiran Mahktota di
Sarawak. Selain itu, terdapat juga ancaman lanun
di persisiran pantai Sarawak dan perbalahan di
kalangan penduduk pribumi pelbagai puak. Raja
Muda Hashim tidak mampu mengawal keadaan dan
lantas memohon bantuan daripada James Brooke
semasa lawatan kali keduanya ke Kuching dalam
tahun 1840. Disebabkan kejayaan James Brooke

It was during the height of the unrest that this English
adventurer, James Brooke arrived in Kuching in
August 1839, when Sarawak was part of the province
of Brunei Sultanate. The revolt against the Pengiran
Mahkota’s rule was led by Datu Patinggi Ali of
Sarawak. There was piracy in the coasts and much
internal unrest within the different native tribes. The
local ruler, Raja Muda Hashim could not control all
these and sought the help of James Brooke, who later
brought about a settlement with the warring parties.
He was rewarded for his services and was installed
as the Rajah of the territory from Tanjung Datu to
the Samarahan River by the Brunei Sultanate in
1846. This territory is now known as the Kuching
Division.
