Investment Opportunites
Strategically located in the heart of Southeast Asia, Sarawak is an ideal centre for many types of industry and is fast emerging as a hugely profitable investment hub. It is the largest of Malaysia’s 13 states, covering an area of 124,449 sq. km, with vast tracts of land available for development and an abundant supply of natural resources, particularly petroleum and natural gas.
Easily accessible from all major cities of the world, businesses and industries can efficiently operate passenger and cargo transport to and from Sarawak. Air travel to the country takes less than three hours from Hong Kong, three and a half hours from Australia, one hour from Indonesia, six hours from Japan, and only 45 minutes from Singapore and Brunei.
Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE)
“I am very pleased that on the first day [of the launch of SCORE], the private sector has already come forward and indicated its intention to invest in Sarawak”.
Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi
Former Prime Minister of Malaysia, 11 February 2008
The Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy, or SCORE, is one of five regional development corridors being established throughout the country. SCORE is a major initiative to develop the Central Region and transform Sarawak into a fully developed state by the year 2020, by accelerating economic growth, and improving the quality of peoples’ lives.
Around RM500 billion has already been committed since the launch of SCORE in February 2008. The Sarawak Government has indicated that it will invest RM334 billion to fully develop the regional economic corridor by 2030.
About RM500 billion has already been committed since the launch of SCORE in February 2008 in Bintulu. The Sarawak Government had indicated earlier that it requires RM334 billion to fully develop the regional economic corridor by 2030.
Hi-Tech Industry
Sarawak is also becoming an increasingly significant centre for high-tech industry. Having acquired Cybercity status from Multimedia Development Sdn. Bhd, Sama Jaya Free Industrial Zone continues to attract major multinational technology companies wanting to build manufacturing operations. Processes ranging from silicon wafer foundry to circuit semiconductor design are now fully established and steps are being taken to promote solar industries.
Other Industries
There are many other excellent investment opportunities in Sarawak thanks to its vast reserve of untapped natural resources, high quality infrastructure facilities, stable social and industrial relations and a productive and trainable workforce.
Besides Sama Jaya, a number of other industrial parks have been established throughout Sarawak as part of an ongoing process of development towards full industrialisation. To attract further investment, the Government offers a range of incentives to different industries in the State.
