Citizenship
Registration of Birth
All births in Malaysia by a citizen or non-citizen shall be registered at the National Registration Department. The Birth Certificate for the child will be issued by the Sarawak National Registrar for births in Sarawak.
Normal Registration
Normal birth registration application means the registration of every birth occurring in Malaysia within 14 days from the date of birth of the child and the informant must be the mother, father, relative, or person who knows of the birth. Applications can be made in Peninsular Malaysia and will be forwarded to Sarawak for the approval of the Regional Registrar. [Section 10, Births & Deaths Registration Ordinance 1951 (Sarawak Cap.10)].
Late Registration
Late birth registration application means the registration of every birth occurring in Malaysia after 42 days from the date of birth of the child. [Section 24(1), Births & Deaths Registration Ordinance 1951 (Sarawak Cap.10)].
The late birth registration application can be made at any National Registration Department Office throughout Peninsular Malaysia by submitting the completed Form I and attaching the supporting documents. If the parents have passed away, any person aged at least 10 years or older than the applicant who knows of the birth can act as the informant.
Delayed Registration
Delayed birth registration application refers to registration made within 15 to 42 days from the date of birth of the child in Malaysia. Applications may be made in Peninsular Malaysia and will be forwarded to Sarawak for the approval of the Regional Registrar. [Section 18, Births & Deaths Registration Ordinance 1951 (Sarawak Cap.10)]
Malaysia Identity Card (MyKAD)
All Malaysian citizens and permanent residents age 12 years old and above are eligible for a MyKad. The first MyKad shall be applied at 12 years old and must not reach 16 years old. In the case of children applying MyKad at 16 years old or above, it is consider late registration and the applicant required to fill in an addition form. Malaysian identity card (MyKad) is compulsory identity card for all Malaysian citizens and permanent residents. MyKad must be renew when a person reaches 18 years old.
